This past Thursday, the first in a series of talks entitled “Future of Creativity: Ideas for Digital Age” took place at UBC Robson Square. The series is being presented by the Artists’ Legal Outreach (ALO) and Books On the Radio and has been generously funded by Creative BC and UBC Continuing Studies.
The topic of Thursday’s talk was acclaimed author Astra Taylor‘s latest offering: “The People’s Platform: Taking Back Power and Culture In The Digital Age”. The evening began with a thought provoking presentation by Astra Taylor outlining some of the main themes of her latest work and was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Martha Rans, legal director of ALO. The panelists included a plethora of new media thinkers from Canada and the Unites States:
-
Brett Gaylor is a Canadian documentary filmmaker whose latest work explores the changing concept of copyright (RiP!: A Remix Manifesto).
-
Amber Frid Jimenez is an artist and professor at Emily Carr whose recent work explores the role of design and technology in cultural mechanics.
-
Maggie Vail is co-founder of cashmusic.org (Coalition for Artists and Stakeholders), a non-profit Portland based organization that takes an open source approach to music production and distribution.
-
Brian Wideen is the founder and COO of Cinecoup, a company that uses a disruptive model for indie filmmakers to develop market and finance their feature films (Check out Wolf Cop for an example of their work).
The talk was very well attended and hosted a diverse group of artists, students, and media professionals. If you would like more information about upcoming talks in the series, be sure to follow Artists’ Legal Outreach @ALOVancouver and Books on The Radio @booksontheradio on Twitter. If you are interested in volunteering at future events, please speak with the ALO’s Clinic Coordinator (and SEALS Vice-President): Yvan Larocque.
