Very fortunate to catch the Vancouver International Film Festival on its last night. SEALS went to watch Foxcatcher, based on the true story of Olympic wrestling champions Dave and Mark Schultz and their contentious relationship with their sponsor, eccentric millionaire John du Pont. An unsettling, slow burn of a movie that balances absurdity with shocking moments of intensity and brutality, it is worth seeing just for the performances of Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, and of course the revelatory Steve Carell. The physical transformations these actors undertook were complemented by these uncharacteristic roles, especially Carell as the disturbed, controlling du Pont. And as a treat for this VIFF audience, an Olympian wrestler got the real Mark Schultz on the phone to speak to us before the movie started.
